Executive branding

Useful thought leadership starts with the questions you ask.

A professional can have years of experience and still find a blank content calendar difficult to fill. Much of that experience comes out in conversation: a question that changes a meeting, a concern raised before a decision, or an explanation that helps a colleague move forward.

Those moments provide useful material for a professional brand.

Start with a decision you understand well.

Choose a decision that people in your field regularly face. Describe the context, the information you would ask for and the factors you would weigh. Keep the discussion specific enough for someone with a similar responsibility to recognize the situation.

You can use a general scenario to protect confidentiality. Make its illustrative nature clear and leave out details that could identify a client or colleague.

Include the reasoning behind your advice.

A recommendation becomes more useful through its explanation. What tends to get overlooked? Which assumption deserves a closer look? What would change your view? These questions give a writer something substantial to work with and help preserve your own judgment in the finished piece.

Read the draft aloud.

Pay attention to language you would never use in a real conversation. Replace broad statements with specific observations. Check that the finished content represents your experience accurately and that any factual claim has adequate support.

Build a routine you can maintain.

Keep a short record of recurring questions, useful explanations and topics you would like to explore. A regular discussion with your content team can develop that material into posts, articles or short videos. Agree a manageable review routine so your voice remains present throughout the work.

A sensible starting point is one question you answered this week that deserves a fuller explanation.
